Dr. Pipes,

Kindly tell me what do you mean by "a system of thinking and acting so foreign to them as to be difficult to comprehend" ? The use of overwhelming, brutal force and extermination of the enemy is ingrained to western civilization.

Victor Davis Hanson notes that in his books on pelopenisian wars. Did not the Romans completely annihilated Carthage ? Did not the Muslims and Jews in Spain were completely hounded out and annihilated by the reconquestadors ? Did not the Aztec and Inca civilizations were completely exterminated by the Spaniards ? Did not the crusaders ruthlessly wiped out the Muslims, orthodox Christians and Jews from Jerusalem after their capture of Jerusalem ? And coming back to more modern times do you know the name of Lothar Von Trotha ? This was a German General who destroyed the herero people of what is now Namibia in the early 20-th century.

Tell me Dr. Pipes after all these examples that I give to you why people like Smith and You think the use of violence is alien to the westerners ? Is not that a hypocracy on your part ?

Coming back to the question of anti-semitism(hatred against Arabs) just having a look at the writings of people like You,Alan Dershowitz,Wafa Sultan,Nonie Dershowitz and Robert Spencer tells a lot about the presence of anti-Arab anti-semitism among "mainstream" western intellectuals.

Hope to know your views about the above mentioned points.

Daniel Pipes replies:

The West has evolved. Americans - Smith's audience - generally prefer to avoid force. Europeans are even more reluctant.
