Jews are a tribe or nation, as are Celts, Angles, Saxons, Arabs, Navajo, Sioux, Poles, and so on.

Reader comment on item: Accept Israel as the Jewish State?

God said to Abraham, "Get going to a land I will show you and I will make of you a NATION."
"Jew" comes from Judea. Jesus was a Judean, or Jew. Christianity in Greek means "Messianism" as "Christ" is Greek for Messiah. "Islam" means submission.

The Jews are, or were until 1948, a nation in exile, but today have at least a part of their historic homeland restored. Just as the Navajo live in part of their homeland, even if it is subsumed within the greater United States. Whether or not the Navajo still practice their ancient tribal religion i do not know.

To me religion is a cultural artifact that one may or may not cling to for spiritual need. But a nation must have a land to cling to to be able to defend its existence and culture. The Jews have as much right to have their national rights fully recogized as do Irish, Poles, Germans or Lakota Sioux. Not every tribe or nation gets to have an independent state. The Kurds don'thave one. The Puerto Ricans don't have one. The Sioux don't have one. And so on.

The Arabs have MANY nations that have the word "Arab" in it. The Muslims have Islamic states. And while most European states no longer consider themselves officially Christian anymore, the Queen of England must still be an Anglican and defender of that faith. No Jew or Muslim or even Catholic may be King or Queen of England. So there is nothing anomalous about the concept of a "Jewish state." It should be considered quite normal, right, and long overdue.
