Reader comment on item: Salvaging the Iraq War

Submitted by Monk (United States), Jul 26, 2007 at 20:35

I speak not of the war, but of the persistent drumbeat of the remaining intellectual soldiers on the right who can't believe that they and they alone involved the US in a war it could have won easily but not for the men they crowed were the "right men at the right time" to lead our country. Though their numbers are dwindling, they still control the reins of executive power and dominate the docile media--a media so docile they now parrot "Al Qaida In Iraq" like the mindless sycophants they are. To this listing ship's manifest one must add the esteemed Mr. Pipes, who, in what hopes is one last effort of delusion, still suggests the need to "salvage" America's mission and prestige.

Mr. Pipes, give up the ghost. There is nothing to salvage, but the lessons we should learn. To think that we can spin this in some way to escape what everyone else in the world knows---that we have lost, that we are getting our tail kicked like we did in Viet Nam and Russia got in Afghanistan---is nothing but vanity, vanity, all is vanity.

Our sin will not be retreating from the battlefield. Our sin will be to continue to believe the hubris of rich and lazy men.
