How to save Iraq

Reader comment on item: Salvaging the Iraq War

Mr. Pipes had the foresight that no one in Washington did to realize the future problems of Iraq and that is because he understands the Middle East and no one from our pro-Arab State Department to any former or present President does.

We had ten years to prepare for this war and did nothing. When Bush decided on a go-date to invade he should have had assassination cells in place and begun a campaign for at least three months prior to the go date to remove Baathist leadership and military people close to Saddam. When the 'victory' over Iraqi forces was complete, the executions should have continued saving only the very prominent like Saddam for a trial. Everyone else should have been executed under a martial law edict. And although we were liberating the Shiites from Sunni boots to their necks, people like Mutada al-Sadr should have been killed as well when it was apparent he was an enemy of the United States' objectives.

I agree with Pipes on his basic strategy today but let's not forget that Turkey is considering invading Kurdistan. Do we fight Turkey to protect the Kurds. No one talks about that. I would focus on the oil pipeline and border areas. Criminals and terrorists who wish to steal of destroy the pipeline must be dealt with. No arrests, please. Iraq today is not able to use their oil wealth because of attacks and stolen oil. That has to end. And families of both foreign and home grown terrorists caught or captured must be paid a visit to warn other terrorists there is a great price to pay for their jihad.
