Supporting the MEK, but at what expense?
Reader comment on item: [Mujahedeen-e Khalq:] A Terrorist U.S. Ally?

Submitted by Safa Haeri (France), May 21, 2003 at 10:55

To the attention of Mr. Clawson
dear Patrick
I just saw the article you co-authored with Mr. Pipes.
I know Mr. Pipes by name, though having read some of his articles, but you, we have met in Washington, discussed together and latter kept in touch by phone and I know that you are well aware of the Iranian situation.
That the US could benefit from the Mojahedeen for espionage and spy activities, might be. For how many items, I don't know, considering that 90 per cent of the organisation had said aout Iran were wrong, except the recent disclosures, which, don;t forget, where first provided by some Iranian officials.

Anyhow, but you must be SURE that if there is only one thing that could mobilise all Iranians behind the mullahs is the US backing the MEK, not a military attack, nor bombing out Iranian nuke installations.

The question is therefore is it worth to lose the sympathy of the Iranian people, to stop the democratisation process, the make the Iranians hating US for another hundred years, make sure that even future post-mullah governments would be against the US to make the MEK honourable and for the sake of one or two "humint?
Best regards
Safa Haeri
