I don't believe things were as "rosy", as Dr. Pipes alludes, in the Palestinians territories prior to the Oslo Accords----otherwise why would Israel agree to it?! Of course there was some pressure from the US, but Israel was also growing weary of a tedious insurgency.
The failed Oslo Accords brings us to today with no "peace" agreement, a belligerent Iran, an envigorated Hizballah, and Hamas emboldened in a legitimate government! If you were looking for a worse possible scenario you would be hard put to come up with one!
And so Dr. Pipes is correct is his appraisal. The Israelis should take a lesson from their biblical ancestors and smite their enemies----then maybe there would be a semblance of peace and stability.
