i've noticed plenty totally non-religious people don a little crucifix necklace, just in case. i guess you could interpret that as a 'im not a jew' sign, if you want.

as for the newspaper comment, it reminds me of the french comment after the synagogue carbomb in paris: they wanted to kill jews, but they killed frenchmen. (paraphrasing here, see bernard lewis for quote)

meanwhile, speculating as to what the kid would have thought had he survived seems futile. he's dead. but the suggestion that his death seems to create more apologists, now that's disturbing.
