Saddam's "only good news" policy similar to Bush's bubble Reader comment on item: About Those Iraqi WMD

If we are to learn anything from history, we must recognize that Bush's policy of crushing dissent keeps him in such a bubble of ignorance that Americans are going to be just as "absolutely astonished" when we finally give up on trying to democratize the Middle East. The vague notion of "war on terrorism" and the mantra that "all people want democracy" have deluded us into supporting a weak bunch of political opportunists in Iraq who can't even form a government in Iraq behind the protection of the most militarily powerful country in the world. I feel sorry for the people of Iraq who have tried to make this terrible situation work, but who may suffer terribly from reprisals once we pull out. We need fresh leadership and a Middle Eastern solution to a Middle Eastern problem.
