The problem and the solutionReader comment on item: Those Danish Cartoons and Me Submitted by Octavio Johanson (Italy), Mar 1, 2006 at 04:01 Thanks to all who bothered giving me a reply. Thanks to Sidda and Daisy for their time. Militant Islam IS the problem and the integration of Muslims is not just a European issue. The situations which I am about to describe are all significantly DIFFERENT from one another, but they all prove my point that Militant Islam is not just a European issue. Israel has got a problem with Militant Islam and the same is true for Russia, India, the USA and, to a lesser extent China. I know, each case is different and we cannot generalize. But Militant Islam is the problem. What is the solution? The Americans would say that the solution is to encourage Muslims to become Americans. That is a naive solution. Muslims are ambivalent about their loyalty. A French Muslim would feel closer to Algeria than to France. An American Muslim would also feel ambivalent about being American. Yes, a few hundreds American Muslims waved the American flag after 9/11, but that is not enough. The truth is that being Muslim is like having a double citizenship. Sidda, Muslims are not like the Irish who integrated into American society. It is much more complicated than that. Ask European and American Muslims an opinion about Israel and 99% of them will tell you that they are pro-Palestinian. THE SOLUTION: ask Muslims to declare their loyalty to their host country.Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
