Reader comment on item: Bibliography – My Writings on the Danish Cartoon Controversy and the Rushdie Rules

Submitted by jakob (United States), Feb 8, 2006 at 11:54

Your comments in yesterday's 'New York Sun' had a quote from the editor of 'Jyllands-Posten'. Am not certain if readers seized the irony of his remarks.

He refused, says he, to submit to Muslim taboos. Islam is a from of the verb slm [to make peace]; it means submitting to the will of Allah. Thus, though the good Dane may be unaware of the import of his words, he was stating bluntly that he would not submit to the prejudices of Muslims. It is equally interesting to note that the one caricature which has become the focal point of Islamic rage throughout the Muslim world, is the one which portrays Muhammed with a bomb in his turban. Why? Because it puts the spotlight on Islamic terrorists tactices and indiscriminate killing of innocent children, women, and men.

If anyone looked at the other caricatures, he would have found one more offensive and crude and downright vulgar. However, the sand storm of outrage centres on the bomb. The mob scenes we see on the television or in the press are politically motivated.
