Danish Cartoons and the Western Way of LifeReader comment on item: Bibliography – My Writings on the Danish Cartoon Controversy and the Rushdie Rules Submitted by William Zame (United States), Feb 7, 2006 at 14:24 I seldom agree with ... Daniel Pipes... but on this matter he is absolutely correct (and he even agrees with The New Republic). This is a clash of civilizations: one which believes in freedom and one which does not. There can be no compromise; either we retain our right to speech, even insulting and offensive speech, or we cease to be a free society. It is claimed that Islam is a tolerant and peaceful religion -- but actions speak louder than words. The actions we have seen in the last week -- not just demonstrations, but official government support of those demonstrations -- suggest exactly the opposite. Of course, this should come as no surprise, given the constant flow of anti-Israel, anti-Semitic, anti-US, anti-West lies published in state-controlled media in Islamic countries. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please. Comments are screened and in some cases edited before posting. Reasoned disagreement is welcome but not comments that are scurrilous, off-topic, commercial, disparaging religions, or otherwise inappropriate.
