I agree with the article that Israeli mainstream society is still too much in a sleepwalk to understand the ramifications regarding the radical nature of Palestinians.
Even after Francis Fukayama, on a trip to Israel after the beginning of the most recent intifada, noted in a speech to the Leftist crowd that the Arabs' violence defies his concepts of post-modern relativism, they didn't even wink. The spin here is that the elections were a reaction to Fatah widespread graft and criminality among their own people.
The real impact will be with the American government. With Hamas' rise, Syrian obstinance and presently leaked reports of their Iraqi chemical weapons transfer, the election of Iraqi pro-Iranian Shiite in American sponsored democratic elections, and the impending nuclear weapons in Iran itself, America will start to speed up its intellectual and emotional preparation for the unavoidable battle with fundamentalist Islam.
Freedom and economic independence for the west, both America and Europe, depend on it.
