Ariel Sharon did not have in mind the satisfaction of the UN as a motive for the pullout from Gaza. So evaluating it this way is a bit unfair to Sharon. It is entirely fair of Dr. Pipes to evaluate the UN this way, of course...
It is reasonably certain that Sharon pulled out from Gaza to "Appease" the Bush administration and the Israeli critics of his electoral corruption scandal. The scandal critics were all on the Left and have shut up as long as they see Israel giving away land. The Bush administration wants further help from the Arab world in the GWOT and needs a "Good move" in the Arab-Israeli conflict to help with this.
Sharon's recent upheaval of Israeli politics seem to only be for the purpose of keeping him in power for a longer period of time. I see no other purpose to dissolving one set of political parties to create another. Peace with or victory over the Palestinians is no closer and no farther as a result of this reshuffling.
