Covid and Charm help the Blue

Reader comment on item: Why I'm Voting for Trump

Submitted by Dave (United States), Oct 20, 2020 at 20:19

While I completely agree with you, I offer these two reasons why we could be seeing a blue tsunami.
First, Biden is much nicer, more humble (usually) and far less abrasive than Trump. When I listen to my colleagues at work, personality seems far more important than ideology or substance. Anyway, who really studies the issues? When Trump faced Hillary last time, he was going against a rather smug and condescending opponent who smeared Trump supporters as "deplorables". Trump may have insulted individuals, but Hillary made the mistake of swiping at entire voting blocks.
Second, the Covid thing has made people insecure about their personal welfare. Insecurity about foreign dangers help Republicans, but Covid is about health and welfare, and when people want government to coddle them they turn to the Democrats. The disaster of Socialism is connected with government overreach brought on by such insecurity.
Should the radical agenda be chosen, it will actually make the economy worse, as excessive spending, taxes and regulation usually do. The pandering to foreign radicals by reviving the JCPOA, hassling Israel about the "Palestinians", easing up on China and Iran, showing weakness to Russia in eastern Europe and cutting the military could invite aggression, while open borders and lifting immigration restrictions from terrorist-prone countries could bring on more crime and Muslim roulette (when the ones who aren't peaceful go off).
Once Covid is over and people feel more secure about their personal welfare, the coming economic stagnation and foreign and domestic chaos could turn the worm once again, but that's in the future.
