1979 was certainly not the first. Five airplanes were hijacked in 1970, inclusive of Pan Am, and blown up. The holy of holies, the Olympic Games were desecrated by Jihadi terrorists in 1972, following which Yasser Arafat was admitted with great fan-fare in the United Nations.
Going further back, the axis of Militant Islam and Nazi Germany participated in the 1939-45 war causing great loss of life, both in North Africa and Europe.

The conflict of Jihad and Christianity is now fourteen centuries long, the present being just the latest spat. It has nothing to do with Israel per se, it has everything to do with Islamic Imperialism being snubbed.
