Reader comment on item: L.A.'s Thwarted Terror Spree

Submitted by Reuben Horne (Australia), Sep 8, 2005 at 11:33

Dr Pipes,
I find the expansion of Islam into the African American community in America to be a truly extraordinary development and one that should be a source of embarrassment to any educated member of this minority. Looking at the highly racist history of the religion - Mohammed's preparedness to ban slavery for Arabs but its continuance visa vis the neighboring African communities, the critical collusion of Imperial Islam in the European transAtlantic slave trade (as well as the Barbary slavers who kidnapped over 2 million Europeans) and the quality of treatment recieved by slaves (who were cheap to purchase and completely the property of their owners to dispose of how they deemed fit) under Islam one wonders where they get off.

Perhaps part of the explanation can be found in the media. Documentaries such as "Islam: Empire of Faith" air nightly on SBS in Australia and devote no time at all to examining the misery and carnage this most heinous of aggressive philosophies has inflicted on the world - America probably gives the religion similar publicity. The media's treatment of the topic is the very embodiment of the liberal left wing practice of levelling where the worst of our society is compared to the best of another society in order for it to not be labelled as manifestly inferior or medievilist.

Then of course there is the huge number of prominent African Americans who are converts to the faith - Mohammed Ali, Malcom X etc etc. Tres irony given Islam did not openly ban slavery comprehensively until 1986 that well and truly before this Ali declared himself a muslim and renounced his original name Cassius Clay as being a slave name. He abandoned the people who fought a war to free his ancestors and joined forces with the people who most likely originally enslaved them. But with such heroes (and martyrs) within the African American community belonging to their faith it is small wonder that Islam has made significant inroads and now seeks to recruit its unholy warriors from this community. They demonstrate the power that mythology has over reality in the human psyche.

Then again perhaps the west just needs a better publicist.
Cheers,
Reuben Horne.
