Reader comment on item: Advice to Non-Muslim Women against Marrying Muslim Men

Submitted by Sadie, Oct 2, 2018 at 22:12

Wow... I never suspected there was a forum like this until I typed in "controlling and manipulative Egyptian men" into Google. I guess I wanted to see if my situation was isolated.

I met Amir 6 months ago online and it seems so sweet and pure at first...he never showed an agressive side...never argued or put me down...nothing. He even insisted that he was in no way interested in my Visa...that he could never possibly leave Egypt to come to America..he has aging parents.

Well about 2 months ago I really began to notice this insane jealousy and controlling behavior...he insisted I wear long sleeves and long pants at all times and it gets really really hot in the Midwest in the summer but I did it bc he would randomly make me send him pictures throughout the day to prove where I was..who I was with and what I was wearing. He wud freak out if I wasn't in constant contact..even when he knew I was busy at work.

What was even more confusing than those behaviors was that sometimes if he thought I did something wrong he might give me the silent treatment for days at a time..with just enough random words of kindness sprinkled to keep me genuinely confused. Never in my life have I felt so pathetic. I'm not God's gift to men..but I'm definitely average looking and have many sweet and nice personality traits so I'm not sure why I feel like I can't walk away from him.

Just last week he got into a heated discussion with me when I asked him if it's true Muslims are allowed to physically hit their wives ( I honestly did read it and wanted clarification). He said hitting no...but then he said shoving is to be expected and hitting well..only in extreme circumstances...like if you smile at or greet a man in public or go near the windows without your entire body covered. I was speechless.

I guess the reason I decided to post is bc just today he asked me how I'd feel if he changed his mind and decided to come to America instead of me moving to Egypt...as planned in December. I feel devastated. Could this been his plan all along?? How can I break ties without my heart breaking? Any advice is appreciated:)
