Democracy is obligatory and not optional

Reader comment on item: Islam and Democracy - Much Hard Work Needed

Submitted by Prashant, Apr 17, 2017 at 21:14

Dear Dr Pipes,

when we discuss the issue of democracy and Islam, we should not treat democracy as something optional. Democracy is not optional but obligatory (even for Islam). Why? Simply because people should be allowed to think freely. If I am a Muslim living in an Islamic country and, I, some how learn about Christianity and want to convert, why should I be forced to become a second class citizen for my choice? It is cruelty to force people into any single mold of thinking.

So if any parts of Islam are incompatible with democracy, they need to be modified. This thought must reach every Islamic ear and mind. So it needs to be repeated every day in every forum where Islam is discussed.
