hypocrisy and democracy

Reader comment on item: Islam and Democracy - Much Hard Work Needed
in response to reader comment: democracy

GMS (great muslim sympathiser?) from South Africa, writes:

"How about paying compensation for crimes of slavery, colonialism and interference in other countries affairs(coup ,invasions)."

The trouble with portraying oneself as a self-righteous prima-donna is that it's all too easy for your detractors to sooner or later point out the hypocrisy of one's stance.

So do we start with the Arab invasions - such as the Arab Muslim invasion of North Africa? Or the well documented Arab trade in black African slaves???

And, if you are not a native sub-Saharan African - what are you doing on their continent? Your presence their represent to some degree an invasion of their territory and the replacement of their native culture.

But then we'd have to start asking sub-Saharan Africans to compensate the Kalahari Bushmen

and the Khoi who were the original inhabitants of Southern Africa

.

This article on democracy in the Middle east - is well worth reading . It's an interview with a noted ME scholar (much more factual and less biased than the opinions of arm-chair pundits).

Note he points out the obvious but overlooked point how that the definition of democracy depends on one's perspective.
