ISLAM IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH DEMOCRACY

Reader comment on item: Islam and Democracy - Much Hard Work Needed

Submitted by JACQUES HADIDA (United States), Feb 7, 2011 at 13:10

I have to disagree with you, Islam is not compatible with democracy as you say in your first pargraph.

As a matter of fact , your next 10 paragraphs show it cannot be, unless we can wait up to 700 years.

I do believe that it is in the Islamic culture to be governed by a king or a dictator. This is what the Muslim needs, someomne in power to show him the way, someone he can trust. The laws of the Koran are too strong for the individual , thus he cannot challenge them and he lets someone in power, be it the king or the iman, to manage his life.

History as we know it is on the side of all I say. Indeed today, youth is more modern and wish to emulate the West, as we may sense it Egypt's riots. However when we read the statistics showing that over 80% of Muslims, favor capital death, stoning an adulterer and cutting the hand of a thief, one wonders.

You raised an exception with Ataturk, but look what hapened. In less than a century, what this great man did is gone.

You say that Islam is changing and can change the way Christianity did over centuries if not milleniums, but look how long it took, nearly 2000 years forJohn XXIII to recognize that the Jews did not kill Jesus. Amazing how several sourats acknowledge the existence of Israel and its right to have a home ( 5/20-21, 7?137, 17/103-104) and yet the Muslim still refuses to listen to them.

It is a long road ahead of us to see Democracy within Islam, and I doubt we will be around when it happens

Thannk you for the clarity of this article
