Reader comment on item: Islam and Democracy - Much Hard Work Needed

Submitted by Prof. Paul Eidelberg (Israel), Feb 7, 2011 at 18:40

I think Dr. Pipes is reluctant to face the logic of a simple fact enunciated by theologian Dr. George Weigel, that Islamic theology rejects the Judeo-Christian concept drawn from Genesis 1:27 -- that man is created in the image of God, a conceot Islamic theology deems blasphemous. It is from this concept, however, that Weestern civilization derives the primacy of free will and reason, the basis of democracy. With all due respect to Dr. Pipes,

I would suggest that he ponder the superb work of Robert R. Reilly, THE CLOSING OF THE MUSLIM MIND which dicusses al-Ghazali and the Ashirite school of Islam, which clearly enuncates the fundamental and inexpungible conflict between Islam and democracy. Indeed, former Muslims such as Dr. Wafa Sultan and otheras that could be mentioned reject Dr. Pipes' optimistic but theologically and historically questionable position.
