The ReEducation of Officer MacDuff

Reader comment on item: Denying [Islamist] Terrorism

Submitted by Robin Dienstman (United States), Feb 8, 2005 at 19:28

If one receives and reads CAIR's e-mail on a daily basis or even a regular one, there is certain to be a comment about this organization's 'education' of a local law enforcement agency somewhere in the US and Canada. Apparently, this consists of classroom training of our police departments on the particular sensitivities that Muslim communities require in applying the laws of our land.

Why the Muslim community has any business in training our professional law enforcement organizations, above and beyond specific religious requirements, is suspect, to say the least. Every community's culture is entitled to be respected up to the point that they become tangent to the sovereign legal requirements of our jurisdictions. Our pluralistic society requires that every individual, regardless of other affiliations, is not above our laws.

If the Muslim community requires that its criminals are exceptions, then how can justice be served? Does this give the agencies, and therefore, the rest of us, a kind of 'dhimmi' status, where we are subject to the requirements of a different set of laws in which we have no vote? Is the lack of the label of Islamist terrorism, or, at the least, racism, to these crimes that are obviously just that, a result of the education that CAIR is supplying to our police departments?
