Reader comment on item: Uncovering Early Islam
in response to reader comment: Translation of the Qur'an

Well, DNM thanks again for your informative reply,. Yes, Hebrew helps tremendously in understanding Arabic words, and I do speak some myself as well, but I had not intended to dissect the Quran to that extent. My son is a great believer in reading the original texts (he is currently knee deep in the Greek historians) and he wants to understand for himself what is inspiring the Jihadists to murder. Or at least to understand better what the beliefs are based on. I myself have read enough to know, as I mentioned, that there is no way to pin anyone down on any point since there is almost always some contradicting verse that says the opposite. Why the Ayas were ordered by size is just beyond me, another of the great mysteries. No wonder Islam has always had such an aura of mystery- they themselves cannot figure anything out for sure.

At any rate, it is still a fascinating topic and I enjoy reading your comments. I convey thanks from my son to you as well.
