One thing I have not seen mentioned in any analysis of the situation is that Russia essentially controls the supply line to our forces in Afghanistan, except for a link through Georgia-Azerbaijan-Central Asia. The Obama administration has inflamed relations with Pakistan and daily increases the tempo of drone attacks there, so it would be quite foolhardy for them to pick a fight with Putin over Syria. I believe Vlad is just hoping for Obama to overstep on this one so he can halt supply shipments to NATO forces and look really tough at home.
