Reader comment on article: Arafat's Last Threat to Israel?

Submitted by Brian Lux (United Kingdom), Nov 9, 2004 at 13:57

Although Daniel Pipes makes pertinent comments about the post-Arafat period, I am dubious about any REAL Israel/Palestine peace deal, for two obvious facts.
1. In a speech to ArabDiplomats in Stockholm in 1996, Arafat said ,'You understand that we plan to eliminate the State of Israel and establish a purely Palestinian State.

2. In its constitution, the Fatah movement, which controls the West Bank, has this in Article 12: 'Complete liberation of Palestine and eradication of Zionist economic and cultural existence.'

Having been a a guest of the IDF when they commissioned a new Air Force base, after the pull-out of the Sinai, part of the peace deal with Egypt, I learned a great deal about the defence problems. Israel cannot pull back to the 1967 lines, and I also believe the wall is permanent. Hamas, et al, in the Gaza strip have only one aim, the destruction of Israel and ethnic cleansing of all Jews in the area.

Americans should never forget the television pictures of Palestinians dancing in the streets after 9-11, and President Bush needs reminding of that fact.
