If I could comment on Arun's point, could this be a reason in itself for taking down Saddam? In other words, along with being no friend of the US and probably more of an active threat than we now know, Saddam was feeble in confronting the encroaching danger from Iran and its allied terrorists. Perhaps the future was another, even far more destructive war that Saddam would lose. Then where would the US and its allies be?
It could be true that in the short term, Iran's mullahs have tightened their grip and created a unifying enemy. However, if we succeed in Iraq and put an elected government in place, Iran's rulers will have to open up their political system....or close the door to the world, a la North Korea. I doubt the Iranian people would put up with that.
