Reader comment on item: Who Lost Turkey?
in response to reader comment: THE ATATURK REVOLUTION HAS FAILED

Submitted by Alain Jean-Mairet (Switzerland), Jun 12, 2010 at 01:24

Atatürk started a process of destruction of Islam. He didn't try to modernize or revolutionize it; he was on his way to kill it and burry it. He was doing the right thing. But somehow, that effort stopped half way. Just like the West renounced to kill the sick theory of socialism after having defeated it on the ground (Cold War), Turkey renounced to bury the carcass of Islam. And both plagues are now returning.

It is not enough to defeat a sick mind the way you would defeat a healthy individual in a good fight. People driven by madness or by ideology can accept any physical defeat and still believe that they have a right to carry on as if nothing happened. It's the same thing for ideology-driven communities. In order to really kill an ideology like Islam (or socialism), you have to crush it under propaganda during a whole generation change.
