Dr. Pipes,
Your wish that Islamic Law change simply isn't going to happen. You are advocating nothing less than an abolition of what Islam advocates -- as stated clearly in the Qurán and Sunna of Prophet Muhammad. Your wish, sad to say, just isn't practical in the real world. Do you think Muslims will be willing to go against a Law that was derived from the Islamic sources of Qurán and Sunnah? What Maldives is doing, I think, is an honest attempt to implement Islamic Law and conform it as much as possible to current day circumstances. Nothing wrong in doing.
