"I guess pretty much everywhere except Turkey are centuries behind the Western world with respect to humanitarian and democratic/individual freedoms. "
Why is Turkey held as a model of democracy and humantitarian in standards approaching those of the West, when the Army is ready to take over at the slightest hint of political upheaval? What ever became of the trial of the leader of the PKK, held all these years to rot on a prison island, even after renouncing terrorism?
There are fundamental problems with this assessment!
