Reader comment on item: Israel's Wayward Prime Ministers

Submitted by Adam Halley (Israel), Jul 4, 2004 at 07:11

Dr. Pipes was almost there when he said, "These negative trends will continue until Israelis elect a modest prime minister."

What he missed is that the lack of Ideology is what allows all of the recent Prime Ministers of Israel to take a 180 degree turn in their platforms. They run for office with no clear cut Ideology and end up playing the political game. The ideological basis as presented in Netanyahu's "A Place Among the Nations", "A Durable Peace" and other books, doesn't stand the test of history and is incapable of providing a firm implantation for the Jewish People in its land. Both Likud and Labor, as well as nearly all other political parties and movements in Israel are founded on this tenuous and temporal ideology (or lack thereof) and are therefore collapsing with it.

The problem does not lie with the leaders or with the parties but rather with their lack of ideological and moral foundation.

The solution is a simple one.

New leadership must shine and come to fruition in Israel. This leadership must change the direction Israel is heading. This leadership must put forth an ideology that is based on authentic Jewish sources. This leadership must excite the youth, invigorate the soldiers, electrify the workingman and unite the Jewish people together in a common goal.

The focus must be on Jewish Identity. With love and understanding we must bridge the gaps between religious and secular. This will not be accomplished through religious coercion but only through a mutual understanding of what gives the Jewish Nation its strength and unique place in the world.
