Your rhetorical question "What prompts each of Israel's recent prime ministers to renege on his resolute intentions and instead adopt a policy of unilateral concessions?" raised the expectation that your answer might be "meddling by US presidents and the State Department." Since you are aware of both, I was surprised they didn't make your short list.
Your observation "These negative trends will continue until Israelis elect a modest prime minister." led me to think "not likely, at least not until hell freezes over."
