America's religious reporting
Reader comment on item: America's Desultory Religious Reporting

Submitted by Judy (Canada), Mar 30, 2009 at 14:10

Of course, religious reporting is very aggressive when it comes to Evangelical Christianity to the point that in Canada, a poll done by Maclean's Magazine found that people are more willing to trust Muslims than Evangelical Christians...

I have known multitudes in the Evangelical group for about 30 years and have found that on the whole they are impeccably careful with their behaviour and reputations and simply don't deserve the trashing they get from the press...I have come across about 1 or 2 people in 30 years who are the lowest of the low morally, but who have hidden among Evangelical/Fundamental people and portrayed themselves as Christians to conceal malicious immoral behaviour that is worthy of censure...these are usually thrown out of the group on discovery and don't deserve to be called by the name of Christ. Otherwise, I would say that on the whole you can really trust the average Fundamentalist Christian for extreme honesty, even to their hurt.

The problem with this is that the normal everyday journalist/unbeliever is unable to comprehend such honesty and therefore suspects it. Also, the other day one person said to me " never trust anyone who doesn't drink (booze)" meaning of course, me. That tells you everything you need to know....I don't drink and I know from experience that I cannot trust many of those who DO. Their values are simply average and self-serving and have no higher standard than man's base instincts. They want no God who commands perfect obedience to His perfect laws. But I will always be suspected by them as soon as I reveal my faith.

There is a possible reason for this...when you are living beneath the radar, the last thing you want is a radar gun held by a Christian...

There is simply no way the press can represent people whose lives are based on premises they cannot fathom...they simply cannot understand the mindset of one who, in gratitude for great forgiveness of sin is willing to give up everything to the One who paid for their sin debt, and who love Him so much they would never consider disgracing His Name...so we must accept what He said...

"The world will hate you" and so it does. I don't really concern myself that they are so deceived because I have become accustomed to it and don't expect it to change. They are blind leaders of the blind and so I simply trust Christ, obey Him and leave the results to Him.

Judy
