Mr. Pipes,

You ask why the mainstream media is so seemingly incompetent in its coverage of Islamic organizations in the United States. I believe that many on the left correctly perceive that these organizations stand in opposition to our culture and our values, and that the left therefore recognizes them as allies. They needn't understand, or even agree with, the positions put forth by Islamists in order to feel a sympathy for their shared radical/outsider status. Perhaps not so much a sense of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend," as a "we're all in this together against the establishment" feeling.

Otherwise, it's difficult to understand how the left can so easily accept a system (Islam) which is antithetical to the left's interests.
