My understanding is that although the winds blow northward, the prevailing current off of Western Sahara is strong and sweeps from the coast into the Atlantic. That's why navigators of antiquity almost never proceeded further; this was the Edge of the World. So for every successful voyage there may be many that fail. Three months or so later, some of these sorry vessels may creep into the Caribbean - as ghost ships, or worse.
