Reader comment on item: Polls, Palestinians and the Path to Peace

If the Palestinians have only a political quarrel with Israel (i.e, Israel's actions starting from the Six Day War), then why was the PLO founded in 1964, with a charter stating that "The partition of Palestine in 1947 and the establishment of the state of Israel are entirely illegal..."? To be redundant, why is the establishment of Israel still commonly referred to among Palestinians as "The Catastrophe"?
