Yes, thank you Dr. Pipes. A good many of the "15,000 Americans" are most likely US contractors, some, if not many, with family in situ.

That's why it's so odd that the US authorities appear to have only the foggiest idea of their numbers, since no doubt, many of these workers were contracted directly by the US govt. in one form or another. Meticulous records of their presence and numbers must have been kept and known. So what's the big secret? There must be some reason for this vagueness.
