in response to reader comment: This would never happen in Oxford

"......And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth..."

Bit of a tautology happening there, must be a bad translation.

Well as far as nasty events go - they've always been happening just that the pace is picking up quite a lot. Now thanks to the cretins in islam we have beheadings and amputations etc creeping in regularly as news items. And not too long ago we thought that that sort of behaviour was over with the French Revolution and humanity had moved on.

The universe could dish up some extremely nasty events if we were unlucky - global sterilsation from gamma rays from exploding stars, stray asteroids, large scale tectonic shifts. It doesn't take much to get to see the nasty side of nature. Many of our European ancestors had to endure millennia long ice ages with all the suffering that must have entailed. Then having to deal with warring neighbourhood tribes - then the Roman Empire (unless you had Irish, Scottish,Germanic or Scandinavian ancestors who never had to worry about them.) Life was short and cheap. In Roman times - an old man was anyone over 40.

So, in terms of what has been - we've got it very, very good. So is it all downhill from here? Those who profess to love death more than the gift of life would like to make it so. But those miscreants are headed for the cosmic scrapheap. Let's make sure they take as few of us out as possible by denying them every opportunity.
