Dr Pipes you wrote

while never touching on the reciprocal situation in Damascus, Istanbul, or elsewhere.

And in regard to "elsewhere" the good old professor should also be reminded of the Church of St. Theonas in Alexandria which was one of the major churches of Alexandria in the late antique period and at the time of the Arab invasion of Egypt is 642CE

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Theonas_of_Alexandria

The Church was converted to a Mosque and it became known as the Mosque of a thousand columns or جامع الالف عمود (it also has other names including al-Atareen Mosque) which in the words of Christopher Haas "the name speaks of the bulidings grandeur"

And here is wikipedia page of the church which is now a mosque

http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%85%D8%B9_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B9%D8%B7%D8%A7%D8%B1%D9%8A%D9%86

So here is another idea for the good old professor that he should also lecture al-Azhar and tell Sheikh al-Azhar to give the Mosque back to its real owners the Copts of Egypt

But again the hypocrisy of his likes has no limits
