Reader comment on item: The Middle East Forum Debates Moderate Islam

Submitted by Russ Gold (United States), Mar 30, 2014 at 23:43

Yet, these days, important branches of Judaism and Christianity accept male homosexual activity

"Important branches"? Well, there are definitely large groups of Jews and Christian who accept this - but largely because they completely ignore Scripture, valuing secular liberalism instead. I think you would be hard-pressed to find any significant group of Jews or Christians who consider male homosexuality to be morally proper.

On the other hand, you don't see observant Jews and Christians demanding the execution of homosexuals, either. That, perhaps, should be the goal: that of a secular society with religious citizens who accept that their religious beliefs are not and should not be binding on their neighbors.

The challenge with Islam is that its Scriptures and traditions contain no real basis for this kind of separation of Mosque and State, as the other monotheist faiths do (Judaism with its three crowns: kingship, priesthood, and Torah; and Christianity with its "render under Caesar that which is Caesar's...") On the contrary, it repeatedly exhorts its followers to perpetual war against non-Muslims. That's likely to take a lot to overcome.
