Israel's continued existence is essential for all humanity

Reader comment on item: Mainstream Jewish Institutions Celebrate Anti-Zionists
in response to reader comment: Why am I not surprised?

As a non-Jew who recently visited Israel and surrounding Arab countries, Egypt and Jordan, it struck me more than ever that Israel's continued existence is essential for our civilisation to survive. I am also struck by the ambiguity that some in the Diaspora, mostly amongst the young, have towards Israel, which I put down to the on-going media and academic onslaught by those on the political left, who in essence are classic anti-semites dressed in a 'progressive' guise.

Having said that it remains comforting that overall public opinion in countries such as in the United States and Australia, where I live, remains overwhelmingly resolute in its support of Israel. However, I think that Israel, its institutions and its supporters need to get more on the front foot and stop apologising and accommodating those who call for its destruction. History tells us that there is no happy ending in appeasing totalitarians who want the annihilation of peoples.
