Reader comment on item: The Problem with Middle East Studies

One sign of hope is the ongoing "conversation" between the Vatican and Islam. See www.chiesa. After his truth-telling speech to the world on September 12, 2006, or was it 2005--our Holy Father has bent over backwards to reach out to Islam. His approach is not without realism. He wants to "dialogue" with Islam. However, the Dialogue will not be and "inter-religious dialogue." That would not work, for reasons you know well. Rather, he wants the Dialogue to be cultural: He's looking for common ground in terms of principles that we may have in common, cultural principles, not religious ones. If this does not produce some form of reason on both sides, nothing will. Ever. A violent clash is inevitable, probably with nukes.
