Democracy: Government with limited powerReader comment on item: Combating the Ideology of Radical Islam Submitted by Stephen Berman (United States), Apr 14, 2003 at 14:00 Dr. Pipes: ...What is truly needed is to institute a government of limited, delegated powers, with checks and balances, based on the American model. This government will ensure freedom and progress. The democracy from which we developed was based on Oliver Cromwell's brutal, militaristic regime in England. It is no better to live under an Oligarchy with unlimited powers, than it is to live under a Dictatorship with unlimited powers. Freedom means living under a government with strictly limited powers, and is not at all limited to having free and fair elections.Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
