It was an obvious mistake at the time: Israel - once again - got nothing but words in return for significant concessions, e.g. the Sinai. It was another example of appeasement, and Begin should not have caved to Carter's bullying. Such mistakes are bad enough, but refusing to learn from them (e.g. Gaza) is literally suicidal.
