I havent read the book yet but I have witnessed that era. Day before first election Mr. Bhuttos' comments on BBC that winning 2 or 3 seats will be a great success and next day sweeps ,leaving hopefull JI in the dust. Then starts proposing muslim world unity and arranges meeting of muslim heads of states in Lahore , Pakistan. Mean while has new constitution approved by the assembly by giving in to ji's demand that state religion will be Islam. I think this was the biggest mistake he made for which he paid with his life.

He shaowed complete lack of fore site or did not consider it very significant or he envisaged how to use it for his next step. This was the first time in the history of Pakistan that Mullahs were being recognised as a power. After Islamic summit in Lahore Mr. Bhutto orchestrated a drama using students from Multan . This helped him to highjack the 'neophyte democracy' and amend the constitution and make a law whose example is not found in the history of mankind. A certain segment of the society were required to denounce their faith as mulims. Then comes the time of second election. Despite his all the popularity he rigs the election . With the martial law of Zia, Pakistans' darkest era starts . Now Mullahs get a firm hold on Pakistans' politics . Pakistan is still trying to recover from the mistakes of that period . How long will it take -- who knows?
