Why cannot Islam itself be classified as the enemy. I can give you two reasons:

1) we are trying at the present time not to frame this war against radical Islamists as war between Christianity and Islam. This is what the extremists like Osama bin Laden want. We are trying to isolate the the extremists from the moderates. Now some say there is no such thing as moderate Islam. That's another argument. But, the fact is that at the present time, we have no desire to declare war on the 1.6 billion Muslims of the world.

2) we in the West have been conditioned to believe that all religious belief systems have equal merit. That works well enough when various belief systems do not have as their central tenet of faith the belief that war must be waged against unbelievers until that belief system becomes the dominant religion of the world. Unfortunately, it is difficult to honestly and openly discuss this belief because of Item #1.

Yes, it is a conumdrum.
