Like Daniel Pipes, a lifetime of studying and writing about Islam has made me extremely sceptical of all claims to individuals being moderates or even secularizing radicals. Of course, there are some genuinely reform-minded people out there, like Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Irshad Manji, Wafa Sultan, and others — they're easy to identify, since they are usually in hiding and normally at loggerheads with the ulama.
Living in the UK, I have less of a grasp of US 'moderates', and I, therefore, found this analysis of Khaled Abou El Fadl most illuminating. I just don't know how Pipes does it all!
