Immigration vs. MarriageReader comment on item: Advice to Non-Muslim Women against Marrying Muslim Men Submitted by Shömi (United States), Jan 28, 2016 at 08:18 Dear Briya, I'm an Eastern European woman. Many years ago I relocated to US in an honest attempt of starting a family with a man I loved. My husband and I were born and raised not too far from each other in geographical sense, however economically and politically much different countries. We were both in our mid 20s, both carried masters degrees in the same field, we met while traveling and after some time decided to continue our story in US. Leaving my country had never been on my mind before. And it soon proved to be the toughest life decision I have ever had to make. The compatibility I thought we had completely vanished the moment we started immigration procedures. Low paid jobs/financial dependency, separation from family and friends, unattended funerals of relatives, soon added up to depression. My husband interpreted my lack of enthusiasm as calculated behavior, accusing me of "visa scamming" (once a national sport in my country) and deliberately delaying the process. We both felt hurt and eventually divorced. I continued on my own (mostly because of my English speaking children) and eventually rebuilt my career and social life here. It took me 10 years to finally feel at home in US. I love this forum, it provided me with great amount of logic when my heart was misleading me. However, from time to time I notice a certain misconception of immigration expressed on here. Obviously greatly on part of the potential visa scammers, but also on part of western born citizens. Maybe sometimes it should be us to verify their dreams, before we get to taste their disappointment. Visa is only a piece of paper granting a new perspective in life. In reality, it takes years of adjusting, learning and hard work to become an equal citizen. Lets not forget what immigrants leave behind might seem little for us, but is everything for them. Such imbalance cannot be good to any relationship I imagine. I know how easy it is to label a person according to nationality, so I will try to avoid any assumptions regarding your husband's motives, but I don't mean to defend him neither. Personally I had my share of complicated men and it's become a deal breaker already. I wish you all my best with whatever you decide to do.
