response to In new relationship, what am I getting myself into? by JessicaReader comment on item: Advice to Non-Muslim Women against Marrying Muslim Men Submitted by gail (Canada), Nov 29, 2012 at 01:04 Well its not as simple as asking has anyones relationships worked. I myself am happily married to a muslim man, but every story is different and more times than not it doesn't end happily. Now for my husband and I we talked everyday for more than a year and I visited and met his family and asked every question I could possible think of before I married him.And the responses you are getting about questions to ask are true...My husband and I address all concerns, expectations and personal issues before we married. And we both made our positions clear on what we expected from one another, what we wanted and what we would not compromise. To be honest, yes you can have a good relationship and marriage with a muslim man , but like any good relationship it takes time. For our relationship we knew going ahead hat we had to have respect, trust and compromise....and its needed from both people. Sara was right when she said ask what he expects. If he is serious, I can tell you now meeting his family is a big deal, and I can also tell you , you will only be introduced when he tells them he wants to marry you. There is so many topics that my husband and I discussed prior to marriage that I wish I could go through everyone. Religion is going to be a major one.And if your like me, and follow no religion, there will be questions from his parents as to why?...lol He never has and never will ask me to convert, as he said , to make someone convert to a religion they dont or wont follow would make them hypocritical, and therefore no point to it. I respect that he is muslim and is the one thing he will not comprise. He respects me for the person I am, so he does not care for me to change, he says he met me as I am , fell in love with me as I am and married me as I am. We are opposites in many ways, but it sort of balances us out...There is compromises to be made, but it cant just be all one sided. My husband or I are not perfect, but he tries to be a good muslim man, and I just try to be a good person and with every story I read on here theres always things that stand out to me know SOMEthings about muslims and Islam....and things I see or hear repeatedly are the demands these men make to woman , about who they talk to, how they dress, and the men drinking and sex...Sometimes I forget that this forum is about MUSLIM MEN...lol Things to ask...what he expects? where does he see this relationship going? If it gets to where you think its serious(talking marriage), he will (should) introduce you to his parents.what does he expect from a wife? How does his family feel about non-muslim women? How committed is he to his religion? Since hes having sex and thats a big no no for muslims who are not married to the person. If he has children how will they be raised? Does he have issues with you having male friends? Does he dictate your clothes, life style? If they act "a little " jealous now, its going to get worst if you marry.Basically anything small now , will probably be big later, like expectation, control, jealousy...Theres no 100% guarantee, I wish there was but just be careful and ask questions. If he honestly cares for you , no question you ask will upset him...good luck. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
