Interesting article. I think another factor is that there is a significant body (about 80,000) of wealthy "Kassie" diaspora in the US and Australia, who often holiday in the island. This includes one of the Southern hemispheres largest pearl farmers, high ranking surgeons and lawyers in Australia and the US, television personalities (John Mangos) in Australia and members of parliament. Not sure what they would do if the island was threatened. Perhaps it's not relevant, but food for thought.
