I agree that Jimmy Carter made a complete mess of the situation made worse as Carter was unlucky that the rescue attempt failed.

The actual deal to get the U.S. embassy hostages out was done by Carter. What was pointed out to the Iranians is that once Carter term was up, that they would have to negociate with Reagan. The Iranians wisely decided that they would get better terms from Carter and that it was unwise to have this problem with Reagan so they made a deal with Carter.
